For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning to everyone! It looks like it will be another beautiful day. The sun is shining, a light southerly breeze is drifting through the trees. And it’s going to be warm today, up around 77F (25C). That’s way above normal for us for this time of the year. I don’t mind however. It is going to change by the weekend and get back to normal, so I will enjoy this weather while we have it. Yesterday I was waiting for the chipmunks to arrive, but only one showed up early in the morning, he took his cheeks full and never came back.

No more showed up until late afternoon when 3 came around, but only for a couple trips each and then they were gone. It’s happening. This means they will soon be gone for another winter, and won’t be back again until April. It’s always so sad when they disappear. It also means that other season of the year that I don’t like talking about is not so far away. I made a new bird feeder for the chickadees, something only for them, they are the only ones that can get at it. Well, the nuthatches can too but I haven’t seen them use it yet.
Anyway, it was an experiment to see if the chickadees would use it and they do, which is great. Now perhaps I will make them something that looks a little better. I used 2 whipped cream containers (about the size of 2lb, 900g, margarine containers). I taped them together with duct tape which is nice and strong, and cut holes in either end for the chickadees to go in and get their seeds. Then I put a wire on it to hang it up. Works great. Doesn’t really look that great though, but the chickadees don’t seem to care, and that’s the main thing. And it recycles something at the same time. No, I’m not going to show a picture of it.

The last time I showed a picture of a recycled feeder I made from a plastic cat litter jug it, well, got a lot of laughter. Nonetheless, that jug feeder is still working after 6 months, even with several bears and raccoons attacking it. It’s still in one piece and all the birds enjoy using it. They only care about the food. I see one of my chipmunks has arrived, but he’s the only one so far. I think it’s Scooter. Coffee and Scooter are now the same size and it’s quite hard to tell them apart, unless I’m outside. Coffee is much more friendly than Scooter. Well, I’m hoping to get some fall pictures today, we’ll see how it turns out. Have a great day everyone and God bless!

Sometimes homemade stuff can be more bird friendly than the store bought feeders.
