Good morning to everyone on this cool winter day! Really, it’s not that bad for temperature, 25F (-4C), just feels cold. Total snow amount from this snowstorm is 10 inches (25cm), which is definitely not as bad as the original forecast of 16 to 20 inches (40 to 50cm) of snow. Seems the worst of it went north, which is fine too. This was a heavy, wet type of snow, not fun to shovel this kind of snow. I only did a path over to my feeders, that was more than I should have done.
At the bottom of all that snow was a layer of frostiness. Now, I had been going out and in all day long feeding the birds with no problems, but once my deck was completely cleared of snow and the temp began to drop, that layer of frost turned very slippery. So when I went to bring the feeders in for the night I wasn’t paying attention, after all, it was safe all day. So I stepped onto that slippery frost and went flying! Landing with a loud kinda thump. So today I’m rather sore, stiff and having some trouble walking around. I have to take it slow, very slow. That’s a problem.
The rock doves have returned, and because I can’t get out there fast enough to chase them away, they eat all the seeds. So the grosbeaks are getting nothing. That’s a problem. If they don’t get food, they will leave, which is what they did this morning. Hopefully they will come back. Somehow I have a feeling that I will lose the grosbeaks. Sigh. Things happen sometimes. It’s a bad time for me to hurt myself. Not that there is a good time exactly, but some times are worse than other times. Oh well.
There are patches of blue sky showing up here and there which helps make it look brighter outside. The trees are still covered with snow and will likely stay that way for a few days. It does look nice. But I don’t like to think about how long this is going to last. Winter is by far our longest season. But it is nice that we had a late start to winter this year, that’s 2 years in a row now, it does make the winter a bit shorter. Even though by the end of January it doesn’t really feel like it’s shorter.
Only the chickadees are around right now. I seem to have lost my 4 white-breasted nuthatches, I don’t understand why, they do stay here all winter. Maybe they will show up yet. I heard some redpolls flying around this morning, I’m hoping to get some of them to make this their winter feeding spot. They are a cute little bird. Well, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and God bless!
