For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning to everyone! It is still very windy out there this morning which is a bit unusual for us. I think we had one day in the past week that wasn’t quite so windy. And it’s supposed to continue. At least it is not very cold anyway with a temperature of 30F (-1C). It actually melted a bit yesterday, but we are getting more snow today. Unfortunately because it melted a bit yesterday, and now it froze again, there is a lot of ice out there. But I was ready for that this morning and even though there are large patches of ice on my deck, I didn’t slip and fall this time.
That part was good. The part that was not good, was the warm weather yesterday. Yep, I said that, I know it is hard to believe, but it is true. Now that winter is here, it is better for the temp to stay below the freezing mark, otherwise it just produces more ice, which is more dangerous than snow. Last evening Muffin was sleeping with me on the chair. Let me clarify, she was sleeping, not me, though I was very tired due to a rather busy day yesterday and not much sleep the night before. But I digress. While Muffin was sleeping with me, there was heavy footsteps on the deck.
It sounded like someone was walking on the deck, and me with my door not locked, and it is dark, not a good combination. Anyway, it woke up Muffin right away and she ran. Typical when there is someone coming to the door. I turn the light on and look…not a person, but a big bear! Does he not know it is winter now and he is supposed to be hibernating? Now, last week, due to the snowstorm, we did not have trash pickup that day. And I have nowhere to keep extra garbage in this small apartment, but because it is now winter and bears are hibernating, I knew it was safe to put the garbage out in the trash can.
Right. So this bear got at the garbage. Now this can has an animal proof lid, turn to lock, animals can’t get it off. Whoever invented that has never seen an animal. This bear turned the lid and popped it off right away. He has seen these before obviously. Though I am sure he would have been able to open it anyway. So he emptied the trash can, making a big mess out there, even though there really was not much he would want to eat. But that did not stop him from trying to find something. Now, my brand new suet feeder was still hanging outside, filled with suet. Great. Next he will come for that.
Now it is not expensive, but it is firmly attached to my secondary feeder pole, and that feeder pole is not so firmly attached to the deck. So I could see this bear tearing that down and making a worse mess than the garbage. Sigh. But, after a while he left and walked up the hill to the neighbor’s yard. Good. So I went out and retrieved my suet feeder before the bear came back. Yes, I know, I’m crazy. While out on the deck another bear comes around the corner! It was those twin bears that come around which I have named Bruiser and Browser. This one was Bruiser, the one with the massive head.
I stomped on the deck and he very quickly and slowly walked away. I mean, he was quick at slowly walking away. I was quick at running face first into the door. I mean, getting through the door fast. Now everything is frozen and I have to walk down this steep little hill on frozen, lumpy and very slippery snow, which is now ice and try to clean up all this mess the bears made. My garbage is now frozen into that snowy ice, or icy snow and will require an axe to chop it free, my plastic shovel won’t do it. It is snowing much more now so I better go clean up that mess while I can still find it and pack it away nicely again so the bears can do it all over again tonight. I can’t win, I know that, but I try anyway. Have a great day everyone and God bless!

Yes, the bears did not get enough natural food this summer so they are still hungry. Normally they would be nice and fat and sleeping in their dens for the winter by now. They hibernate (sleep) in their dens all winter and don’t come out again until spring. But they are still hungry yet, which is bad, that means they will be out earlier than normal in spring and they will be dangerous, looking for food.π¬π»π»
Yes, I like to buy and store food in winter, it’s not always easy getting out when it starts to get real cold, or during storms.π³πππ₯π₯π₯ππ§π₯π π
Thanks so much, have a good night!ππ»πββββπ

I think it just means the bears are still hungry and haven’t put on enough fat yet for the winter. But it would be nice if it wasn’t very cold, though that usually means lots of ice. Yep, nice mint tea for me right now!πββπ»βββπ§

I would have thought with the snow you were done with the bears! it’s got to be any day now that they hibernate…

Yes, it certainly surprised me to see them out still. It’s a bit cooler tonight so maybe that will coax them into hibernation and stay there!
