For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning everyone and Happy Friday to you all! It is a cloudy day, very heavy, dark clouds actually so it is a rather dull kind of day that requires having lights on inside. It is also very windy out there, so even though the temperature is not bad, the wind makes it feel much colder. We are supposed to be getting some snow today, but so far we have just had a light dusting of snow. Yesterday was a fairly quiet day at the feeders, but today has been very busy.
I left some of the hanging feeders out last night so the chickadees would have their food ready nice and early, just in case I did not get out there early enough. I should be able to leave the feeders out all the time now, unless it is supposed to snow during the night, then I will still bring them inside. There seems to be more chickadees than normal today, and that is fine. The nuthatches are busy too, plus the woodpeckers. There are now 3 hairy woodpeckers and 3 downy woodpeckers. The evening grosbeaks were back this morning too, at least 40 of them.
But they only stayed less than 5 minutes and they flew off, and never came back. Oh well. Plus a new visitor showed up this morning, new for this winter anyway, a Canada jay was here helping himself to the suet. The Canada jays only show up during the winter, though I often see them when walking down to the river in the summer. They are so opposite to blue jays that it is hard to believe they are both jays. I hope to get a picture of it the next time he shows up. The Canada jays do not stay around long, so it is hard to get pictures of them.
I missed out last winter, but I did get several the winter before last. But it is always nice to keep trying for a better, or at least different, picture of the same birds. They were named gray jay for decades, but Canada jay prior to that. We finally got the name officially changed back to Canada jay last July by the board that oversees name changes for birds here in N. America. The blue jays are looking for more peanuts and I am looking for more coffee. Thank you for reading today! I hope you all have an enjoyable Friday and God bless!

They are a very popular bird here in Canada, with over 80% saying in a survey that they would like to see it as our national bird. But so far our government has rejected the idea of having a national bird.

Steve, thanks for sharing a photo of the Canada jay. There is quite a bit of contrast between these and blue jays.

Yes indeed, not only in looks, but behavior as well. Canada jays are not aggressive like the blue jays for example.

Thank you so very much! That top photo is close to the shopping area of our town and the water is a small bay of our lake. It is just starting to freeze now, though most of the lake still has no ice on it.ππ»π§π§
