For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning to everyone! How are you doing today? Perhaps you would like to stop and join me for a cup of coffee? It is cold again this morning, and windy, and snowy. We got another 2 inches (5cm) of snow, though it has basically stopped snowing now, just a few snowflakes coming down. A bit of a break before tomorrows snowstorm hits us with even more snow.
They are calling for another 6 inches (15cm) of snow, and perhaps more. Then next week we are back to that cold weather again, much colder than it should be this time of the year. February is normally a milder month, but it has been colder than normal this year, much colder. The long range forecast is saying that March and April will be colder than normal too. That means a late spring which is bad. It also means a lot of ice this spring, which is even worse.
A warm, fast melt would be the best thing, but we get what we get. Winters with lots of snow usually mean a late spring. Well, I’m not sure where all my grosbeaks are this morning. I have only seen 2 evening grosbeaks, a male and female. I have not seen even 1 pine grosbeak. I know the pine grosbeaks head back north quite early, they are normally gone by mid March. Most of them have been gone since this past weekend, that would put them about a month early.
That would seem to suggest an early spring. Guess we will have to wait and see. That would be sad if they have gone early. That means no more opportunities to get a picture of them on my hand. However, if it means an early spring, hmm, that would be a good trade. Oh well. There is still the possibility that the neighbors dog has scared them away.
Grosbeaks can be scared away from a food source quite easily, since they are fast, strong flying birds. They can easily find another food source. But smaller birds cannot do that, so they are willing to put up with more as long as there is good food. Just went and cleaned the snow off the feeders again, it has started snowing lightly once more. Time to do some cleaning while Muffin has her morning nap. Thank you for reading today. I hope you have a wonderful day and God bless!

seems like mother nature is giving you mixed messages about when winter will be over

Yes, it’s kind of strange, but certainly very early for the birds to be heading back north. But it fits with the sudden increase of pine grosbeaks and redpolls and then suddenly gone. Even redpoll numbers are way down.
