Good morning everyone! The sky is that same rich blue this morning and the sun is shining so beautifully! It almost seems like a nice spring day. Looks can be deceiving however. We are back to cold again. Very cold. It was colder yesterday then it had been, but today is colder yet. I got up to a temperature of -20F (-28C). It was a bit of a shock going outside to feed the birds this morning. And all through the night I kept waking up to the booming and banging which comes along with the cold temps.
It is actually the frost in the wood that causes the noise, which can get very loud at times. This is March. It should be starting to get a bit milder, not melting weather, but milder anyway. And it is getting colder instead. Those poor little red-breasted nuthatches, they have to keep stopping their eating to warm up their little feet by sitting down over them. Then it is back to eating again as much as they can before the next break. Chickadees are here too, though not in large numbers like before.
There are large numbers of redpolls however. No grosbeaks have shown up yet. The blue jays have been here and are now gone. I have not seen any woodpeckers yet either, but I may have missed them. Yesterday the sun was shining so nicely, so I decided to go out in the afternoon to try and get pictures of the birds. I had a couple of birds land on my hand.
But it was so cold out there with that strong north wind blowing, so I was only able to stay outside for 15 minutes. My hand was cold enough by that time. I also had some redpolls land on my head. It should be nicer, though more clouds, on the weekend. So it does not look like I will walk to the river again until next week. But I will share some river pics today from my last walk. Although I did not see or hear anything on my walk to the river, I did see and hear a few birds on the way back, plus two squirrels.
One squirrel was Scramble who was chattering at another squirrel, who was also chattering. There was one lone chickadee, which was kind of odd, and a couple nuthatches. In some ways it had a sort of lonely feel to the walk, yet it was still so beautiful walking through the trees. But it is going to take a long to melt all that snow. Thank you for reading today. Have a beautiful Thursday and God bless!
