For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning on this beautiful Wednesday! Time for some coffee and a bit of this and that! It is a very sunny morning with a bright blue sky framed by leaves of various shades of green. The birds are busy singing, a few at least. Hmm, counting them up there were 4 different species, not counting the crows and gulls. I see there is the odd small cloud in the east that has twice blocked the sun momentarily as I have been writing.
I hope that does not mean that clouds are moving in already. We had some bad thunderstorms yesterday again, one of them gave us 2 inches (50mm) of rain, plus some tiny hail which bounced all over my deck. One pot of flowers was literally destroyed, the others were closer to the house so they were protected better. However, they might perk up eventually.
Speaking of flowers, I came across some nice wildflowers the other day on my walk to the river. One is the “spotted coralroot”, a wild orchid that has no chlorophyl in it, therefore it has no green color, it is brown with white flowers spotted with red. They really are quite beautiful and seem to be spreading quite a bit along the path. I have been trying to get a pic of them since 2018 and finally succeeded.
Though I am sure I could do with an even better pic of one. Their growing season is basically over now and most that I found the other day had already finished blooming. Then there is the “hairy beardtongue”, a beautiful flower in the snapdragon family. There is only one place I have found them and that is right at the river, along the gravel embankment that is slowly falling into the river. I did find a group of them in a more safe location to take pics, fortunately.
Then there is the “clustered bellflower” which has expanded its small population over the last 3 years. It is still just a few flowers, but they are so beautiful. They are not a native wildflower however, coming from somewhere in Europe. I think they are a nice addition to the landscape and bees certainly enjoy them too, so that is always a good thing. Well, perhaps I will get another walk to the river today, looks like a nice day for it. I hope you enjoy the pics today, have a wonderful day everyone and God bless!
