For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hi everyone! Yep, I am here today but I was out this morning getting more pics around the area of flowers and different pics of our lake. I even tried for some insects, but that did not work out so good. For some reason they did not want to cooperate. Anyway, we have another robber fly to enjoy today. It is called “Milbert’s Robber Fly”, and this critter is huge and mean looking. I was not sure what it was when I first saw it, it just seemed too big for a fly, but it is.
If you have seen an adult grasshopper, well, this robber fly is much bigger and actually feeds on grasshoppers. Oddly enough it is the most common large robber fly in our area, yet this is the first year I have seen one, or maybe I should say, the first year I recognized it. I probably saw it other years but the size would likely have made me turn and run!
Though people are not its target, I do not think I would want to let one sit on my bare arm, it just looks like it might bite. They generally prefer a more open, grassy area to live and hunt. These robber flies are quite interesting, I must look for more of them. Well, have a wonderful day everyone and God bless!

They look similar to a May fly I think π€

Oh my no, not even close. Mayflies hold their wings straight up over their back, like a sail, their bodies are curved and thin. This guy is solid, holds wings flat over its back, strong jagged legs, thick body.π¬

Hmmm I’ll need to look up the Mayfly. Maybe what I was calling a Mayfly is one of these?π€

Mayflies usually show up in July in fairly large numbers around lakes, then die quickly.

I had two different species land on me today while I was out taking pics down by the lake. But both landed on my right side so I couldn’t take pics of them. Then a third one landed on my hat, got a pic of that one. Well, I hope it turned out anyway, haven’t checked yet.π€ππ·

Now, as we return back to summer and fireflies. There were a lot of dragonflies out today, everywhere I went, but would they sit down so I could get a picture? One sat just long enough to make me think I would get his pic and then at the last minute, off he went! It wasn’t nice at all.π¬π€¨

Sometimes I think so too. And they share the info with coded wing flaps.

So are you going to start naming your robber flies like you do the other critters that abound in your neck of the woods!? π

Hmm, never thought about that, might be a good idea! Except these critters don’t come around the house, so that would make it hard.ππΉ

Ever seen the documentary showing a lake in Africa where millions (or billions, or trillions) of flies emerge all at once… wow.

Yes, they are scary looking critters, but apparently harmless to people.
