Midweek Musings. #4

Good morning to all of you on this beautiful Wednesday! It is sunny, wonderful blue sky, just a light wind, and it is warm. This is a perfect summer day. Coffee on the deck this morning was great although none of the chipmunks were around. Mica, the squirrel, showed up a few times and had his breakfast first, then he hauled away a few peanuts.

It is slow going with the Red Squirrels. They can only carry one peanut at a time. Chipmunks, on the other hand, can carry at least 3 at a time. I have seen Pocket actually put four in his mouth and cheeks, then scamper off with them. Chickadees, nuthatches, goldfinches and purple finches have all started to come back to the feeder now, bringing their young with them.

One of those cute Orange-belted Bumble Bees. Not many around this year.

They show up usually once a day, early morning normally. It is nice to see them back again. The parents are thin and ruffled looking, the young are fat and healthy looking. They have obviously been well fed. The hummingbirds are certainly busy at their feeder these days. Oddly, I have not seen any young hummingbirds yet this year, unless there are none, or perhaps just one.

Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

There are two males and two females coming to the feeder. Those are ones I have seen. Only a couple of them are cooperating for pics this year, the other two fly away as soon as they see me. Not very nice. Oh well. I will keep trying.

Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

I can hear a chipmunk out there now, their busiest time is between 10am and 2pm. This is an odd year for the various critters around here. All other summers the chipmunks would be busy from early morning until it started to get dark. Not this year. There are 3 new chipmunks around now, babies from this summer. They look so small compared to the other chipmunks.

One has gotten quite friendly. Now I need to look for some characteristics about each one so I can tell them apart easily and then give them names. They sure found the peanuts quickly. Well, my coffee is finished and it is likely time to put more peanuts out for those chipmunks. I hope you have a most wonderful Wednesday everyone and God bless!

Steve and Muffin.

    • Thanks so much Sheri! Yep, I like to name them all once I’m able to identify them each in some way that is unique to them. They learn their names quickly too.πŸ˜ŠπŸΏοΈπŸΏοΈπŸ˜Έβ˜•β˜•

      • Any time! And that’s so sweet. I used to do the same but had to stop when we moved out of the city. Between the birds, squirrels, rabbits, foxes, deer, etc.. there are just too many to keep up with.

      • Hey, I agree. I’ve noticed that a lot of “wild” animals will respond in a positive way if you’re calm, patient, and kind to them.

      • Muffin and I need to move Sept 1. Everything is chaos in here right now! The worst part is I do not have the helpers I need to move that day and I’m not sure what to do about it.πŸ€”πŸ™„

      • Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that.. Do they have any kind of moving assistance programs there? I know there are a few churches and volunteer groups here that will help if they can..

      • This is just a small town and there are no moving assistance programs here. And few other programs for that matter. But I do have some help now, just enough, but more would make things even better. However, I won’t be greedy.😊😸

      • Shame. Considering what everyone’s been through these last few years, you would think there would be more.
I’m so glad you’ve found some help though, every bit counts!

      • Yes, that is so true! It can be very hard to find people willing to help these days. Moving day is coming fast and I still have so much packing to do! But it will get done in time. Muffin is helping too, in her own way.πŸ˜€πŸ˜Ή

      • Well, many prayers that it all goes smoothly and safely, and much love to sweet Muffin. I hope you both have a beautiful weekend. 🌻🌞

      • Thank you so much Sheri! I may have to start packing at 3am tomorrow to have it all done for Friday, but it will get done. Have a wonderful day!πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜»β˜•β˜•

      • Hi Sheri, oh my, that was quite a move, very hectic and mixed up. I was quite seriously hurt so can’t do much right now. Poor Muffin has had a hard time adjusting but I think she is settling in now. She is sleeping good and does enjoy looking out the windows.
        Have a great day!πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜»β˜•β˜•

      • Oh dear.. many prayers that resting will speed your recovery and you start to feeling better soon.
But againβ€”We need to wrap you up in bubble wrap, my friend.
I’m glad that Muffin is settling in nicely, the poor dear. I read a study that determined it was less the new settings and more the onslaught of foreign scents that cats tended to react negatively towards.
        Get well soon!

      • Thank you Sheri! Yes, lots and lots of bubble wrap! That might actually be warm too in the winter.πŸ€”
Yes, Muffin is doing well, though certain noises still scare her, like voices in the hallway.πŸ™€
        Thanks! Have a wonderful day!😊😺🌞

      • Lol. I don’t know about warm but it is waterproof.. though I doubt that means it would keep you dry.
Maybe one of those ridiculously thick snowsuits you can barely move in?
And I’m glad to hear Muffin is adjusting. Animals are so resilient. ❀️
Thank you! It is beautiful.. we got a bunch of rain and the temperature has finally dropped below 90.
        Hope you’re feeling better!

      • That’s it, a snowsuit on top of the bubble wrap, great idea!
Yes, Muffin has really settled in good now, even the barking dog down the hall doesn’t bother her anymore.
We have you beat, we’ve dropped below 60 now! That’s during the day, below 50 at night. Yes, I’m doing much better now though still not back to normal yet, hopefully soon. Thanks Sheri!😊😺

      • Muffin can just roll you around.
And 60? Already? It just got warm there like.. two weeks ago!
I’m glad you’re feeling better but hopefully you’re back to 100% soon.. and that you’ll stay that way. 🀭🀞

      • Our summers are definitely short here. Our warmest weather was actually back in June, normally it is July. Fall is in full swing, most of our birds have gone south. However, today it was actually 72! Very warm for this time of year, but that will begin to change tomorrow.
Thanks Sheri! Sometimes I think I’m getting worse again instead of better, like today. Oh well.😊😻

      • It’s the complete opposite here. Long Summers and short Winters. But it has started to cool off early this year so we may see a harder Winter.
And I’m sorry to hear that.. hopefully that was your last bad day before everything smooths out. 🀞

      • Today it was 59 and rainy all day with more rain coming tonight.
I hope things settle down soon, I am really getting worn out.
Hope you have a great week!πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ΊπŸπŸ‚

      • That sounds lovely.. minus the rain. Fortunately we’re no longer under near-constant heat advisory so that’s nice but the rain.. bleh.
You’re still not feeling well? Goodness. No wonder your worn out.
Any way you can grab Muffin and just disappear into rest-mode for the next couple of days?

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yep, I could disappear for a bit and probably should take some serious rest time, but then I see things that need to be done and just have to do them. It’s hard to relax when things need to be done. Oh well, nearly there and then I can relax properly. I am feeling quite a bit better today though, that bright shining sun todayπŸŒžπŸ˜ƒ helped a lot so I spent time on the balcony. Tomorrow it is back to rain again for a few days.πŸ™„
