For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Please Note: This story happened a number of years ago.
It was summer, but not hot that’s for sure. However, it was still pleasant enough to try a short hike. But this time the hike would be a bit different than others. I wanted to do a night hike. There was going to be a full moon and completely clear sky so a night hike would be fun. I figured. I should know better. For some reason I keep thinking my hikes would turn out normal. Like hikes do for other people.

I stopped at my favorite restaurant for supper before getting ready to go hiking. Krissy asked why I was there so late in the day, so I told her my idea. I didn’t mind telling her because I knew her parents wouldn’t let her come with me since I was going to be gone all night. Krissy thought it would be lots of fun so she went to ask her mom. Her mom told her she needed her Dad’s permission.
She asked him and he came over and sat with me, just staring at me. “You want to take Krissy on a hike all night?” he asked. I tried to clarify that a bit and said she asked if she could come, but yes, it would be all night. He then smiled and said it was fine with him. It was summer, but the nights were getting longer now, so we had about 6 and a half hours of darkness ahead of us.
We left about an hour before darkness would cover us so we could get through the worst part of the hike while we could still see well. Then we came to an area of Jack Pines where there was little undergrowth just as it was getting dark. The moon was just coming up and provided some wonderful light for us. That moonlight shining through the pines gave us a sort of an eerie wonderland for our hike. Krissy was holding my hand, very tightly, as we walked, but she kept commenting on the beauty of the scene before us.

I knew where I was going since I had been here before, though during the day. Amazing how different things look at night. Next we came to a spot where we had to go down the side of the hill we were on, cross a small stream and climb another hill on the other side. Both hills had an easy slope to them so it was easy walking. During the day.
However, as we got further down the hill the moon’s light was hidden and it was quite dark. I had my flashlight though, so that helped. Krissy suggested I should try calling owls. They are not too vocal this time of year, but I tried anyway. On my third call I got an answer from a Barred Owl, one of our big owls, and it wasn’t far away. It finally came flying in and landed in a tree about 30 feet away.
Having my flashlight gave us a good look at the owl. He didn’t seem to like it however, and flew off once more. I called again when we were down by the stream. This time it was a wolf that answered. Krissy didn’t like that part too much. But I told her the wolf was far away and I wouldn’t call anymore. We easily jumped the small stream and were soon climbing the hill on the other side.

The moon’s light was soon shining on us again and that eerie landscape returned. We kept walking through the pines with their long, twisted shadows stretching across the moss covered rock. Then I got that feeling of being watched…
To Be Continued.

Kind of, just stressing over the hail damage claim with insurance.

I didn’t know you had a hailstorm down that way.

Yeah, the one from last year. I claimed it this summer because I am fixing up the house to sell next spring. They think that 2200 dollars minus one thousand deductible will is enough for me. Did I ever say how much I dislike insurance companies??π€¬

Yep, I agree, it is hard to deal with them. They always look for a way to give the least amount of money when it comes to payout time. But they paint such a nice picture when they want you to sign with them.

Yeah, o kidding!! ugh!! This is the first claim I’ve ever put in on a homeowners policy!! What am I paying all this money to them for if they aren’t going to payout when it’s needed?? I’ve been with them for 20 years!! I would have plenty of money to replace the roof if I had all the monthly premiums back….π

Yep, a friend of mine up here found that out too. I have tenants insurance but if I lost everything in a fire I wouldn’t get enough to even pay for replacing essential items. I wouldn’t bother but it’s necessary to have it in order to rent here. Sigh.π

Yeah, it’s racket if you ask me. So, when is the rest of the night excursion story happening? She really does have a trusting father. Either that or he taught her well to keep a close eye on you… hehehe ππ

Possibly tomorrow, I hope. Well, he figured after knowing me for 11 years that he could trust me. She was 17 in that story and I was 27. We had some fun and crazy times together! Talk tomorrow!

Kristy was so adventurous to have no problem keeping up with you or goading your on! It is amazing her dad trusted you with his much younger than you, daughter!

Yep, she was indeed adventurous and loved doing crazy things! I had known the family for 11 years at the time of this story. Her dad told me he would never let Krissy do things like this with any guy, but there was just something about me, he said, that he knew he could trust me.ππ©

No worries. How are things today? Getting out for walks sleeping well, getting along with Muffin and the neighbors?π€

Still not feeling well and it’s hard to do anything. It’s even hard to spend much time on my blog since it’s hard to sit too much.
I get along with the neighbors that I see, which isn’t very many. Mostly 6 women and two guys. Don’t have anything in common with any of them.
Muffin and I always get along.π»π

It was good. I did some tree trimming after work. That was an adventureπ₯΅ But other than that, not much.

Did you trim the top or the bottom? It was 75 today, but didn’t feel like it, there was a cooler breeze too. Supposed to be cooler tomorrow.

I did the lower branches. The one tree was looking more like a bush π and the other two just had some long branches that were beginning to sag, so I trimmed them back. It was nice here also, a bit breezy, but it felt nice.

Oh, a bush tree, those can be nice if they’re bushy and not treey. Did you see the second part of the night hike adventure?

I shut down early anyway. I missed you at noon, had someone stop in. Then workers stopped in. Then I had a phone call, then someone else stopped in. By then it was 3pm and time to get off this laptop and get some other things done.π¬

Not to worry… It was worth the wait to read it.π How’s the laundry going? Are there any wrestling matches over the machines?π

Laundry is done long ago now, I was there at 4am. Usually no one around at that time, usually. Sometimes it can be quite busy with people there ahead of me.π¬ Sometimes people will use all the machines to save time, though there are two signs in there saying not to.π€ They always have some excuse why they need to use them all.π

No, the flying club had a fun fly today so I was there from about 9:30 to 3:30. How about you? What did you do today?

Sunny and very smoky here today. Hit 80 which was nice, got just as warm inside too. That was a bit surprising. I didn’t do much today, cleaned my bathroom, tidied up the place a bit, did some rearranging of stuff on my shelves. Did the bulletin for Church tomorrow.

Hi! Yes, I do! It’s about 20 minutes away. Sorry about yesterday. It’s my week for handling most of the shared duties, yesterday was keeping me busy. How are things in the great white north?π₯Ά

That’s not so bad. Not a problem. Nice weather, gets to about 80 to82 degrees, down to 60 at night so it’s easy to keep my apartment from getting too hot. Humidity makes it feel like 90. So we are getting more summer before fall hits us. Smoky again today too which blocks the sun a lot.

Ugh…. muggy is not good! It’s muggy hear, but the temps are in the low 80’s, so it’s tolerable. I only have 4 months to work until retirement!! I don’t want to wish my life away, but I wish it’d hurry up!!ππ

Oh, it’ll come fast enough, then you can lay back, relax and find out there is never enough time to get things done! ππ

I sure hope so!!π It’s like waiting for a pot of water on the stove to boil! It takes forever π So you going out for a walk today?π€

Yep, heading out for my walk very soon. It’s starting to get cloudy and supposed to get some rain later so I want to get my walk done before that.π

Yeah, don’t miss that opportunity! I miss taking my walks. My heal and ankle are pretty bad these days. I need to have surgery, but I want to wait until I retire so the rehab won’t be so complicated by working at the same time. Probably next year, late summer, early fall.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yep, better to wait for retirement for surgery, it does make things easier. Anyway, guess I’m off for my walk, I’ll be back later.π

Hi Steve! I have a question for you about your ancestry. Was one of your McCleod predecessors a RCMP? I saw a show on tv on the mounties and one of the original mounties was a McCleod! I just about fell over!!π«¨π€ ππ
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hehehe! None that I know of, but there are many different spellings of McLeod, this is mine. We used to be part of the MacLeod clan but in the mid 1850s there was a feud and people were killed and jailed. Part of the MacLeod clan split and changed the spelling to McLeod. That is when my ancestors moved to Canada, Nova Scotia to be exact.π
