For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hi again everyone! Welcome back to another incredible insect post and another of our fun and beautiful butterflies. Today we introduce the Eastern Comma butterfly. It is a beautiful orange and black color, with brown as well and has wonderful jagged edged wings. It has a wingspread of about 2 inches (5cm).
It usually shows up in the latter half of April or beginning of May, depending on the temperature. They will stay active around here until about mid September. They hibernate here in hollow trees or other sheltered areas. Caterpillars eat a variety of plants and leaves from trees and feed at night.

Adult butterflies feed on tree sap, rotten fruit and decaying organic matter. They seldom go to flowers, though I have seen them on flowers at times. They are not found much further north than us in this area, but can be found all around the Great Lakes and further south in the US, plus further west here in Canada.
They are one of the first butterflies that I see in the spring. They have two broods each year. The summer brood has darker hindwings than the fall brood which overwinters. I hope you enjoy this butterfly, they are always such fun to watch and photograph. Have a great day everyone and God bless!
