For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
After dropping off Wendy, Aari, Carine and Bear drove out to the airport where the rest of the Black Wolves were waiting for them. They had already made sure the jet was safe and ready to go. And that is exactly what they did, they all boarded the jet and within 25 minutes they were in the air and on the way home again. Hopefully Wendy will not show up again for a long time.
Meanwhile, back to us in the helicopters. We had been loaded onto the helicopter quickly and were very soon in the air also, heading back to where these helicopters came from. Our jet was close by at an airport and once we arrived we were quickly transported to our jet and soon we were heading back home as well. Samantha started with the intravenous right away for some of us and she asked Kat to see if she can help Misty, Celestine, Macy, Jackie and myself. Unfortunately, Kat’s abilities for healing are mainly for wounds, gunshots, stabbings, open wounds kind of problems.
However, she can help in other types of health problems as well, though this one is something new for her and she didn’t quite know what to do in order to help. It’s a good thing this is a big jet and our best equipped medical jet. It has many beds that fold down for use, and when held up against the sides of the plane they open up into seating for passengers. Misty and I have our own little room to share since we are the worst of the group. After helping Misty and I, Jennifer followed Kat out of the room and hugged her. “Thank you big sis,” she said through tears, “I doubt Steve would have survived without you.”
Then Jennifer went over to Samantha when she saw her take a little break, and she said the same thing to her, thanking her for such dedication and help for all the team affected by this, and especially for helping me survive. “That’s a doctor’s job,” said Samantha smiling. “I know that for you it’s more than a job,” said Jennifer, “I can tell by watching you.” “You will need to play a big part here too,” said Samantha, “Steve will need a lot of rest to fully recover from this. And you will need to make sure he gets it.” “Yep, and that won’t be easy,” she replied, “he can be rather stubborn at times.” “More like all the time,” said Samantha. They both giggled at that one.
We are now at home and the patients are in the clinic, two to a room. We could each have our own rooms, but Samantha thought it would be better to double up so no one is left alone. Since Misty and I were the worst of the group, we were put in the same room. Misty and I were not exactly talking much at the first though, and for some reason Misty was responding better than I was. Finally one day Misty asked Jennifer who the silent person was in the next bed. “Doesn’t she like me?” asked Misty quietly and still with a hoarse voice.
“That’s not a she, he’s a he,” said Jennifer, “it’s Steve and he still is unable to even whisper.” Misty’s eyes got quite wide when Jennifer said that and she turned her head a bit to look at me. “Sorry Steve, I didn’t know,” she said very quietly. “He forgives you,” said Jennifer, “it’s going to be a long time before Steve is back on his feet again.” “I’ll help him,” said Misty quietly and she tried to remove her blanket. “Oh no you don’t,” said Jennifer, “you are confined to your bed until Samantha says otherwise, and that is an order. Kat and I are in charge now, so you better listen.” Misty sighed loudly.
Five days later. My bed is now raised so I can sit up, though I’m still not allowed to get out of bed. Misty is still here too, but she is able to get up and walk around and she goes to visit the others now although they will mostly be getting out of the clinic soon. I think Samantha is deliberately keeping them in longer than necessary so that Misty and I don’t start complaining about staying in longer than everyone else. Suddenly the door opens and closes quickly and a smiling face pops up beside me. “Morning Daddy!” said Steffie excitedly, “look what I bring today!” She had a plate of fresh donuts, 9 of them.
“I thought maybe Auntie Misty here too,” she said, “so I bring 3 each.” “She went visiting the other girls,” I told her, “but we’ll save hers for when she comes back. Um, how come you’re not in school today?” “It Tuesday,” she said, “no school.” We quickly ate our donuts, then we sat there talking and looking at the 3 remaining donuts. Just then the door opened and closed quickly. I haven’t seen Misty move so fast since we got home. She came over to the bed smiling with her hands behind her back. Then she noticed the donuts. “I bring donuts for you Auntie Misty!” said Steffie excitedly.
Misty laughed. “Look what I have,” she said, and she brought out another plate of donuts, 8 of them! We were all filled up completely full after all those donuts. Meanwhile, back in the kitchen. “I’m missing 17 donuts,” said Cassie, “if I didn’t know Misty was still in the clinic I would blame her, and Steffie is in school.” Jennifer was there when Cassie said that, so she decided to do some investigating. And she began with our room for some reason. “Ooooh, that was so good,” said Misty. “Yep,” I said. “Yep, yep,” said Steffie.
That’s when Jennifer came in. “I smell donuts,” she said frowning at us, “and why are you not in school?” “It Tuesday, no school today,” she replied. Jennifer looked at her, then she contacted Galyna who told her there was no school for the younger children today. “How did you manage to carry 17 donuts?” she asked Steffie. “I only take 9,” she said. Jennifer looked at Misty and shook her head. Well, looks like Misty and I will be here for a while, but the other girls are getting out of the clinic tomorrow, though they will not be ready for active duty for a while yet.
Aari has been visiting Macy every day, with Sky bringing him back and forth so he is not seen coming here. Mandar came to visit Jackie her first 4 days back, then he had to leave on a business trip. Jackie was doing fine by then. Mandar had been very worried about her throughout our ordeal. He left his two bodyguards with us. He had been training them especially to work for us, along with a 4 more men to join the Black Wolves which will bring them up to 30 men and Carine.
The two women are Piper and Patti, who are sisters, just a year apart and could easily pass for twins. Kat and Jennifer are in the Leader 1 position once again, though for some reason I don’t think they like it too much. Personally, I’m thinking of resigning that position and they can stay there. I will just stay around and look after the chateau team perhaps, that should keep me somewhat busy, but also keep me out of trouble. Maybe.
We will need to have a team leaders meeting about that, but first I will talk it over with Jennifer, Kat and Celestine. I added Celestine since she is the personal counselor for Jennifer and I. Due to Storm’s great hunting skills the cats survived quite well. They did have a good checkup with Bridgette and she said they were fine, so they are running around with the other cats again. Well, I sure hope nothing else happens for a while, we definitely need a break and time to relax and recuperate. We shall see if that happens.
The End, but a new story will be coming soon. ©2026 Steve McLeod.
