Tuesday’s This and That.

Good afternoon everyone! Well, our hot spell has finally come to an end. Actually it was our second hot spell of the summer. I will say one thing, this apartment definitely gets hot when it’s hot outside. Guess that happens when you live on the top floor of a building. And this building isn’t even very tall, only 6 floors. Oh well, for this little town this is a tall building. All that heat we have had really dried out our forests too. Up here our forests survive with very little soil on top of granite rock.

Many of the trees just grow on the rock with their roots traveling far to find soil with nutrients and also going deep into cracks of the bedrock seeking out more nutrients and water sources. So, things dry out very quickly and as that shallow soil dries out, so does the trees and that produces just the right conditions for a forest fire to start. These days they are called wildland fires for some reason, but it’s the same thing, the forest burns.

This is the worst year on record for forest fires in our province and we still have half the summer to go, plus fall. There are more than a dozen communities that have been evacuated and some have already burned to the ground, but everyone got out safely. There are many fires in the 40,000 to 50,000 hectares ( 98,000 to 125,000 acres) in size. There is one fire that is now at 318,800 hectares (788,000 acres) in size. There are presently 140 wildland fires (forest fires) burning right now here in the northwestern part of our province.

Thankfully none are close to our town. Yesterday when I got home from shopping, amazingly nothing really odd happened while I was shopping, but I digress. Anyway, there were two fawns lying down on the lawn out behind our building, so I took a few pictures of them. They were so amazingly cute lying there amidst the grass and a sea of yellow Birdfoot Trefoil.

It was just a perfect combination to make a very beautiful photo of them both, or actually, a lot of photos of them. Once I began taking photos of them it was hard to stop. I even took some photos of them out the hall window of the sixth floor. The photos were not quite as good though since that window hasn’t been cleaned yet this year. Oh well, it still provided a different look at these two beautiful fawns.

They were taking a short break, and nap, while their mother was out eating somewhere close by. She is always within hearing distance of her fawns. It’s much cooler today, right now at 2pm, the temperature is only 61F (16C), though it is supposed to reach 66F (19C). Somehow I doubt that it will though, unless the sun shines and it has been cloudy all day. I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless!
