Morning At Steve’s Country.

Hello everyone on this another beautiful, sunny day.  The brilliant green of the leaves against that blue sky is breathtaking this morning.  Sitting on the deck with my coffee, listening to the amazing chorus of birds singing as the sun just begins to peak above the hill.  Those beautiful golden rays gently touching my face.  The wondrous scent of a summer morning as the dew still lays on the ground.

No idea what these flowers are, but they looked so pretty along the walkway. They are quite small, about an inch (2.5cm) across.

Well, it looks like everyone is here again this morning so let’s all grab our coffee (or tea or hot chocolate, since not everyone likes coffee, very strange) and we will head down to the lake again.  But we will go to a different spot and see what we can find.  This location is actually very nice and is right by our local tourist information building.  There is a nice breeze this morning, quite comfortable really with the sun shining on the whole area.

You can just see the highway across this little bay.

This is really a nice spot for a picnic or just for having a cup of coffee and enjoy looking out across the lake at all the islands.  It won’t be long now and this will be a busy traffic area for boats.  We just missed seeing one go by but there is another one right now, they are heading under the bridge to the marina on the other side.  It is mostly smaller boats like that one, although there are a lot of larger boats as well, plus sail boats.  We will see some of these at a later time.IMG_3824

But it’s nice right here, even though right next to the main highway coming into town.  It is still quite quiet, you can hear the many birds singing.  The song sparrow which are in every location by water, plus there is some tree swallows flying around.  They must be nesting close by and will have their young to feed by now.  Over in those bushes a phoebe is singing his name loud and clear.  Too bad he won’t come out in the open so I can get a picture of him.IMG_3842

The gulls are calling to each other and there, did you hear that?  The laughing call of loons.  They must be fairly close, yes, there they are, coming out from behind those shrubs.  They are both around without a young one, so they must have lost their nest.  That happens a lot with loons for one reason or another.  There numbers are decreasing, even though some places, like here, they are still very common.  I love loons.  They really are a beautiful bird with their black and white plumage.  And they have very red eyes.  Unfortunately that doesn’t show up in my pictures.  Have to be closer to get that detail I guess.  But I’m quite happy with my pictures, the only ones I have so far.IMG_3879

Well, I know many of you need to get back to work or home so guess we will wrap up our coffee time for today.  I hope you have enjoyed our time together this morning, enjoy your day and God bless!

Continuing With Steve’s Adventures.

Hello everyone on this very beautiful sunny day in June.  It is a nice time of year.  This would be the time when dad and I would go out looking for those elusive insulators.  So here is another of our adventures together.  Dad and I are hiking mile after mile down the tracks.  Tromp, tromp.  Mile after long mile.  Tromp, tromp.  Finally we arrive at the first hill leaving behind that long section of lowland.  That was a long stretch, I said.  Dad looked at me and said, we’re only about 500 feet from the car!  That’s all?  Seems like we have been walking for miles, I said.  Bonehead, said dad.  At least he’s enjoying this.  It is a nice warm, sunny day.  Being wasted looking for some blobs of glass.  Amazing.  Why waste time collecting something that just holds wire to a pole?  Chunks of glass with no historical significance.

Some of these blobs of glass called insulators. The one on the left, made in USA and used here, the one in the middle, called gingerbread boy, made in France, not used here, the one on right is Russian, not used here.

We should go back and find a nice spot to dig for some old bottles, I said, certainly a nice day for it.  Dad just looked at me.  Why waste time collecting bottles, he said.  They don’t even look nice.  Just look at those beautiful insulators sparkling in the sun, he continued, now that’s something to collect, with a lot of history behind them too.  We obviously look at those chunks of glass a little differently, I thought.

I was hoping this higher ground would last for a while.  It was not to be however.  Just a small hill.  And a curve in the tracks.  Leading to miles of swamp.  Sigh.  Look at all the swamp, I said, might as well turn around now.  That’s opportunity, said dad, that swamp is dry and there will likely be a lot of insulators laying around just waiting for us.  Well, he might have a point.  Around here we have discovered that as insulators were removed, the linemen would toss them into the water, if there was any nearby.  Just wait, said dad, we will find a lot when you go down there looking for them.  Hmm, certainly went from we to me in a hurry, said I.

Well, the mud might be soft and you are lighter than I am, said dad.  I need to gain weight, I thought to myself.  Off I started down the embankment, which at this spot was only about 20 feet high, not as bad as some we have had to go down.  Maybe you should come along, I called back, after all, if I need help in a hurry it would be nice if you were closer.  Okay, said dad, and he started off.  Right then a train came roaring around that curve.  We didn’t hear a thing until it was right there, a common problem around here, those rock cuts always seemed to block the noise of those trains.

A beautiful cedar waxwing, they are the last birds to return to us, always in time to eat the flower petals on the apple and cherry trees.

But it startled dad this time and he slipped.  And was he moving along down that embankment!  Right behind me.  No way I could go anywhere, there was wild rose bushes on both sides of me.  Only thing to do is run down and try to stay ahead of dad.  Right.  Suddenly, whump!  He hit me and I landed on his stomach, my backpack on dad’s face.  Ooohhhh, groaned dad.  But amazingly his glasses stayed on, usually they fall off quite easily.  As we came to the bottom I quickly rolled off dad and sploop!  Dad landed in a patch of wet, sloppy mud.  Bonehead!  Amazing that he could actually be enjoying sitting in that wet mud.

More glass insulators, made in USA and used here.

For my new readers, dad said bonehead a lot when we were out together.  I finally figured out it must mean he was enjoying himself.  Couldn’t think of any other reason for saying it.  Anyway, back to the story.  Wait, this is getting a bit long.  I will continue next time instead.  It is a beautiful sunny day.  I hope you are all able to get out and enjoy your week, God bless!
