Darting Dragonflies #4.

Hi everyone and welcome back!  It was a nice sunny day here, but the clouds have returned once again and a little snow is expected overnight.  Then it’s back to that frosty cold for a couple days, and nights.  But for now it’s time to return to a more summer like post and enjoy another look at the amazing acrobatic dragonfly.IMG_6568

Though the dragonfly wings look very fragile, they are actually very strong.  They are supported by a network of veining on their wings as seen in the picture which helps to give them strength. IMG_7766

The above dragonfly is another one with those forward pointing wings.  This one is a different color and also larger than the others shown previously.  Dragonflies provide a good service in that they eat many other insects, most of which are harmful.  A normal size dragonfly can eat hundreds of mosquitoes each day.  Flies are another favorite meal for these insects.IMG_6051

Dragonflies, as we saw before, can fly very fast and they do so with minimal wing beats, much slower than that of flies, bees or mosquitoes.  And they are capable of flying against a very strong wind.  Dragonflies will also eat flying ants, grasshoppers and even butterflies and other dragonflies.  Just depends on the availability of food.  But their favorite remains mosquitoes and flies of every description.
