For a smile as wide as a country sunrise

Hi everyone! Here I leave you this week with another picture of the pileated woodpecker, but this time the female. As mentioned yesterday, the male has red whiskers and the female has black. You can see that in the pic with the black whiskers extending from the base of the beak and back along the cheek. This female has found herself some lunch too. Woodpeckers have very stiff tail feathers to give it excellent balance on the trunks of trees. They also have two toes facing forward and two backward for extra grip. They can move up, down and sideways on trees very quickly. Their sideways movement is especially helpful for the smaller woodpeckers for escaping hungry hawks. They are able to move from one side of the trunk of a tree to the other in a split second, keeping themselves alive. More birds next week, have a wonderful weekend everyone and God bless!
