Steve’s Bird Of the Day #35.

Hello everyone! Yep, I’m a little late with this, technical issues. Today’s bird is the “common merganser”, and this is the male. They are a bit bigger than the mallard that we just saw and these birds are divers, they can go up to 20 feet, slightly over 6 meters, deep. They can stay underwater for up to 2 minutes. Fish are their main diet, but they will eat most anything small, crustaceans, frogs, and more. Although they normally migrate to warmer places, they do sometimes spend the winter up here where they mix with other ducks on the river. During the summer they spend a lot of time just loafing and sleeping on the water, much like this guy and two others were doing. Usually it’s hard to get too close to them but these birds didn’t seem to mind me sitting there taking pics. Have a great day everyone and God bless!

He went back to sleep after I sat down.
