Steve’s Bird Of The Day #42.
Hi everyone! Today’s bird is the “spruce grouse” and the pic above is a male trying to attract a nearby female. These birds can be found mainly in coniferous forests from Alaska through every Canadian province and territory, plus a few of the northern U.S. states. They mainly eat the needles of jack pine, white spruce, black spruce and a few others. They can hold 10% of their body weight of food in their crop, an organ between their throat and stomach. Then they can digest it later in a safer location or while sleeping on a cold winter night. They are non migratory even in their furthest north boundaries. The female lays up to 9 eggs, on the ground, usually at the base of a tree with branches that hang to the ground. They prefer areas of younger trees for living. During the summer they will eat other things such as small insects, berries, leaves and flowers. Usually when danger approaches they stay motionless and won’t fly until absolutely necessary. Yep, basically they are a small chicken, not very good eating though due to the pine and spruce needles they eat, strong tasting meat, kind of like pines.😛😂😹

It’s the only way they can survive.🤔 Hunters have been able to get right up close and shoot them,🙄 but not many people do it a second time. They also smell bad cooking them.😳🙄

ever tried it 🧐😳 I have tried a fish once and it’s a fish that we normally don’t eat. and it smelled like a dead.meat… what else I did? buried it 😂😂😂 i don’t want anything else to eat and suffer 😂😂

That’s my last chance of food for survival 😂 I will hardly eat anything comes from underground…😂except 🤔carrots & onions 😉

That would be a long list of enemies, fox, wolf, coyote, owl, hawk, pine marten, people, lynx, bobcat, cougar, bear. I’m sure I’m missing some.😀😺📷

Yes, I wish I could see more of them and get more pics, that’s the only one I have. They are able to get their own food by their second day as they travel around with mom. She still helps at the beginning.😁😸🐣🐤
