For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning everyone and Happy Sunday! It is a beautiful, sunny morning with just a light breeze, here at Steve’s Country. Smoke is in the air. Yes indeed, there are several forest fires around the northern part of our province. But none are close to where I live, yet. But smoke from a couple of those fires came in last night, though it’s not really as bad as what they said it would be like. So that’s good.
The birds are singing happily. A family of chickadees are out here this morning, so I put just a few sunflower seeds out for them which they found right away. The chipmunks and two squirrels are taking turns hauling away peanuts. That’s one time the chipmunks really beat the squirrels. A squirrel carries away one peanut, a chipmunk will carry away 3 or 4 peanuts.
That’s due to their huge cheek pouches, something that squirrels don’t have. Certainly saves a lot of trips. Grover and his mate showed up and each made two trips taking peanuts back to the nest. Can’t remember if I mentioned this, but there is another new member of the chipmunk group. Most likely it’s Scooter’s brother, though he could be from a different family.
Since we did good with this last time, I’m going to ask for help naming this little guy too. It is a male, so if you have a name for him, please let me know in the comments and we will do the same as last time. Tomorrow we’ll let Muffin pick out the new name for our little chipmunk friend from all of the entries. She did a good job, after I crumpled the paper with each name on it, into a ball. Then she scoops it out of a bowl. It’s a beautiful summer morning. I hope you all have a nice sunshiny day and God bless!
Steve and Muffin.

Good evening Beverly! There is already a Chester, but I will add Alfalfa to the list. Cool name. Yes, I’m watching carefully now with the weather as it is and temps getting into the 90s this week.π Thanks Beverly, it was a great day. Hope you have a great week ahead!ππΊββπ

Good evening Steve! I kept thinking that there was already a Chester and was going to double check, but had to leave for church. The fact I kept thinking it should have made take that name off. π. I will blame it on age. Thanks on the feedback on Alfalfa. I thought it be a cute name for a chipmunk, they are so cute.
Glad you are watching carefully, I pray people are considerate and cautious (not carelessly tossing their cigarette butts) which should be the case all the time, but especially with the dry state and those temperatures.
Youβre welcome Steve, glad you had a great day! I did as well. We had more rain which is really needed, but I am indoors for the most part on Sundays with two services. Thanks, yes, I am looking forward to a great week, hope you have one as well! πβοΈβοΈπ

Hi Beverly! Muffin has been sleeping all morning so I couldn’t get her to pick the winning name, perhaps later. It works good with her, she loves a crumpled piece of paper so I just put them all in a bowl and she digs in right away and pulls one out. Sometimes 2 or 3 so we have to try again. It’s a beautiful sunny day right now but due to all the smoke the sun can’t shine fully so it may not get as warm as forecast today. Still nice out though.
Thanks Beverly!ππΊπ

Hi Steve, thanks for the update! Wow, Muffin must have been up throughout the night. That is great that she can dig out the winning name for you, how fun!
Nice on the sunny day, hope the smoke clears so you can fully enjoy the warmth and beautiful sky, but I know it will take few days. That is the case here with our fires, when they occur. Youβre welcome Steve! ππ

Yes, the smoke will clear once the wind switches to a different direction that has no fires, which is getting harder all the time. 20 new fires started up today due to dry thunderstorms, which we have been getting more frequently this year. We have had that happen sometimes though, but not for quite a few years now. There are now 48 fires burning, the largest is still only 20,000 acres and it’s a long distance away. There’s really nothing close to us right now, but that can change suddenly too.
Enjoy your evening Beverly!ππΊπ

I hope they are able to keep the fires under control…

Actually they are not even fighting them, just letting them burn. They are in very inaccessible locations, no people around so they usually just let those fires burn.

hopefully those in charge know what they are doing by letting them burn…

Yes, they do it every year. Just too costly to try and fight them in those isolated areas. They can get big sometimes though. Once a fire topped a million acres. Sometimes in late fall these fires go underground to burn for the winter and pop up again when things dry out in spring. I guess it is part of the natural landscape though, helps to rejuvenate areas, so it is said. I have my doubts on that one however, but that’s just me.

Thanks Eugenia! Actually the fires are not under control and they are not fighting them. The fires are in inaccessible locations with no people around, so fires like that they just let them burn. Thanks for the name, now added to the others.ππΈπββπΏπ₯

So far there is nothing close by at least. But the smoke from fires is sure getting thick right now.
