Tuesday’s Tails #13.

Good morning everyone! Yes, I’m back with my morning post today, I missed yesterday morning. There was one thing after another yesterday morning and by the time I was ready to write my post it was actually time for my mystery series post. So I decided to skip it for this week. It is a beautiful, sunny, summer morning, though very smoky again, not quite as bad as it was earlier this morning however. And it was very cool this morning, with a temp of only 57F (14C), but it has begun to warm up. Our number of forest fires had dropped to 138 on Sunday, but as of this morning there are 166.

The largest is now 386,460 acres in size. There are a lot now in the 50,000 to 150,000 acre size. Most of these fires are not under control, but about 35 are under control now. There are 900 firefighters, 186 pieces of heavy equipment, 26,904 pieces of fire suppression equipment, 13 fire engines, 14 CL415 waterbombers, 3 twin otters, 74 helicopters, and 30 fixed wing air supports that are now fighting these fires. Fighting forest fires is a hard, dangerous, physically and mentally demanding job, these men and women deserve our support.

Sir Henry, lying down on the feeder patiently waiting for me to bring the food out.

It’s been an interesting morning here at Steve’s Country. All the gulls were here at the same time for breakfast. I didn’t know that, since I can’t see who is up on my roof. Sir Henry was on the feeder and I knew Sir George was here too. So I put food out. Sir Henry was first down, followed by Sir George and Ricky. There is just not enough room for everyone, especially with Sir George there, he is by far the largest of the group. So Sir Henry got knocked off the bird feeder. Gulls have long narrow wings, and these big herring gulls need time to get airborne because those narrow wings don’t give them good lift on take off. So Sir Henry fell to the ground in the raspberry patch and couldn’t find his way out to the open yard. So I went down to help guide him in the right direction.

Sir Henry after filling up with his breakfast.

I talked nicely to him the whole time to keep him calm and got him walking the right way. It took a bit but he made it to the open yard and after getting his wing feathers settled, off he went. I was a bit concerned he might be scared to come back. But he was back again an hour later looking for his breakfast, just as friendly as ever. So that was nice to see. Guess he realized that I was trying to help him. The house here has been sold, even before it was officially put up for sale. I know the man who bought the place and he said I could stay here. That is a big relief. So I can stay close to nature a little while longer. My gulls and chipmunks will be happy too. Sounds like the chipmunks are looking for more peanuts again, and I’m looking for more coffee. Thanks for stopping by this morning, have a wonderful day everyone and God bless!

    • Yes indeed! Some carry buckets that hold 500 gallons, which would be about 2,000 liters which they drop on hot spots of forest fires. They also now have helicopters with a belly tank which can be filled with water or chemical fire suppressant to drop on fires. But here, in Ontario, we only use water, the chemical suppressants work good, but they also poison the land and waterways for years to come, which hurts the wildlife. And we have an abundance of water here, which makes it quicker to obtain and get back to the fires.

    • Yes, people often do that here too. There are pros and cons with that, it will help to slow down fires, but won’t stop them. Plus leaving it is helpful to the well being of the forest. “Deadfall” as we would call it, provides homes for small animals and insects which are important food sources for other mammals and birds.

      • Not just cold, a bad fever, that sunk me down 😳 one paracetamol 650 worked overnight, I was about to walk in doctors place if my fever wasn’t reducing, luckily no temperature after that ☺️😇 IM still having cold, I’m very weak to cold 😾😯. Taking natural soups now to get rid of it. Smokey day? did you wore double masks? stay safe, stay safe, did you move out? little far from your place, because ashes falling isn’t it? 😳😳🙄

      • Soup is good, and stay in bed, don’t go outside, stay inside. No TV. Nisha, hide his phone too!
Ash can travel a long distance, it goes several km into the air and travels on the upper currents, then falls.😲 No ash today though, just smoke, lots of smoke, and more smoke. I can’t move out. No fires close by here,🔥 the closest is 40km away.😳🔥 Sleep well!😁😴😴🌙

      • Good night Simon!🌙😴 See, you would sleep better if you put your phone down earlier so your brain could relax and you would sleep better.😁 That’s what I think.🤔🙄 Don’t get rid of it totally, just put it down earlier before going to bed.😛 Glad you’re feeling some better! Good night!🌙😴 Oops, I said that already.😳😬

  4. Root beer floats sound good ! I am glad that you do not have to move out quickly !…so the gulls like to sit on the feeder waiting for their breakfast ! Smart ! …it is smoky out , so that means another day inside for me ! ☕️☕️🙂😻☕️☕️🍪🍪

    • Well, only Sir Henry likes to sit right on the feeder waiting, the others sit on the roof or the hydro pole. Yes, another smoky day, but I think it was worse yesterday. It’s supposed to get worse for us overnight and tomorrow.😀😺🌞☕☕🍨Yep, wish I could have the root beer floats, but I can still have the root beer!😋

  5. Abbott: Do you see those birds flying around up there? Do you know what kind they are?
Costello: No, what kind are they?
    Abbott: Those birds are gulls.

  6. Those fires are really a huge problem for people and for forests’s habitants 🔥😢
I’m glad that you can still stay in the house. Being close to nature is really priceless ☺️
Have a good day you two and stay safe! ☺️😻

    • Yes, those fires do kill a lot of animals and birds, ones that can’t get away fast enough. Larger animals can usually run out of harms way.
Yes, I am so happy that I can stay, though my rent will likely go up, but things like that are normal.
Well, it’s night for you so I will say have a wonderful Thursday Ribana!😀😺☕☕🌞🌲🌲🚶‍♂️
