For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hi everyone!
I forgot to do my insect post earlier, so, here it is now. Hopefully you do not mind looking at insects up close. This one is the “Giant Eastern Crane Fly”. And they really are big, with a wingspan of over 2 inches (5cm) and a leg span of over 3 inches (8cm). They are a member of the ‘True Flies’ category of insects and fortunately they do not bite. They looks somewhat like giant mosquitoes and many people refer to them as such. They only live a few days and generally do not eat during that time. Often found in moist places and readily attracted to artificial light. They are quite common in spring and summer. Have a great day everyone and God bless!

Thanks, I have to get busy and find more. I do have a few I can use yet, but I want to get more sorted before I run out.🤔🙄

That would be a thought. What range of insects were you going to use?

I have more different bees, wasps, plus butterflies, damselflies, dragonflies and others, including beetles which may not be too popular. Plus several different flower flies too.

I have a picture, actually several, of a wasp I can’t identify which is odd. Looks like a mud dauber wasp but it’s much bigger. Kind of odd. I was stung 11 times last year.🙄😬😮🐝🐝

Okay.. what did you do to make them sting you?🤔🤨

Nothing at all, but some of them didn’t like me getting so close I guess. I wouldn’t want to be stung by one of those big guys though!😬🐝

Good I was getting concerned that the raccoons may have abducted you and were holding you for ransom until the squirrels paid up!!😂😂

Well, it was so nice I had to stay out there and enjoy it for a bit, then when I got back inside Muffin woke up and wanted attention, then food, then I looked at my giant stack of dishes and fainted, then Muffin helped me get up and carried me back to the chair and that’s why I was late.🤔😬🙄😹😹

No, after the exterminator was here the bugs left! I’d like to know what he told them to get them to leave!! How about you?? Any SPIDERS 🕷 I should know about??🤭🤭🤭

No spiders these days, but I’m sure they will be around soon. Not looking forward to that, just too many of them in this place!😬😬

Yeah and the exterminator isn’t cheap! I have them come every three months to the house in MN. No spiders no more!!😁

Then Muffin and I have to move out for a while and that’s a bit problematic. Plus there is no one in town, I would have to get someone from Winnipeg.

That’s a problem.. then get a fly scattered or do like my mom used to do on the farm.. she would take her broom and wrap a cloth around it an use that to go around the house wiping down all the corners and ceilings!😁

Yep, that is how I do it too. This year I’m trying a mix of vinegar and mint and wipe down everything.

I’ve heard that mint is also good for repelling mosquitoes..🤔

Supposed to be good for any bugs, although spiders are not really bugs, but it still might work.😁🙄

Won’t hurt to try it!😁

We used to call them “Skeeter Daddies” when I was growing up.

We used to think they ate mosquitoes and actually they eat nothing!

Man those things get on my nerves. Called Mosquito Hawks down here.

Yep, that’s what we called them too, I never knew until recently that they were flies and didn’t eat!🤔😂

😮 How does it live if it doesn’t eat🤔

Like a lot of insects, it only lives a few days so it’s not necessary for them to eat. Basically once they are out and flying around, they mate and die.

I guess their only purpose is to fee the birds and spiders then😂
