For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hi everyone! It is another gray, cloudy and rainy day here. We had the same thing yesterday too. We do need the rain though as we didn’t get anywhere near the amount of snow we usually receive this winter. Now that I live in this apartment building, I much prefer to have the winter snow, and a little less rain in the spring. But both winters I have lived here we have not had much snow.
Oh well, that’s what happens sometimes. Anyway, here we are with another butterfly to look at today, called the Little Wood-Satyr. This one is not very colorful, but it’s beauty still stands out nicely. It has that nice light brown color and those pale yellow circled “eyes”, or spots, on it’s wings. It likes to perch on large leaves of low plants, or right on the ground where it blends in so well it’s hard to see it at all.

It often likes to sit with it’s wings closed, except when basking in the sun, so it was nice to find one with it’s wings open. They have a wingspan of 1 and a half to 2 inches (3.75 to 5cm). It is actually quite hard to get close to these butterflies. They are only flying around from late May to early August and have just one brood per season. Caterpillars eat at night mainly on grasses.
They overwinter as a caterpillar as well. Adult butterflies feed on flowers such as Common Milkweed, White Sweet Clover, Staghorn Sumac and daisies, and others as well. They can be found along edges of wooded areas, meadows or old fields, openings in forests and beside streams. Have a great day everyone and God bless!
