For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hi everyone! Time certainly flies by quickly sometimes. Normally time goes by quickly when I’m busy, but lately I’m not busy. But more on that another time. For today, we have another beautiful butterfly to look at and enjoy. This is the Atlantis Fritillary.
It is a beautiful bright orange and black butterfly, the females are not quite so bold in their markings as the males. They have a wingspan of 2 to 2 3/4 inches (5 to 7cm). They are a common butterfly here in the north, even going as far south as northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. They can be found flying around from the middle of June to the end of August and have one brood per year.

They overwinter as a caterpillar, which eats mainly violets. Adult butterflies can be found at a large number of wildflowers including ox-eye daisy, pearly everlasting, vetches, orange hawkweed, fireweed and fleabanes, to name a few.

They are a beautiful part of summer in the north and are easy to photograph. I hope you enjoyed our brief look at the Atlantis Fritillary today. Have a great day and God bless!
