For a smile as wide as a country sunrise

Hello everyone and welcome to the Versatile Blogger Award! This is one I don’t get very often so it’s always nice when it does show up. But then, I like them all really! Anyway, I was kindly given this award by Sheree who has a wonderful blog that you must visit. She has lots of great photos of her travels and gives amazing and interesting travel posts of all the different places she and her husband have visited. She even gives history of the areas which is fantastic. She is all around a wonderful lady, so if you are not yet following her blog, why not go take a look and give her a follow too! Thank you so very much Sheree for this award!!

Hello everyone and welcome back to our Darting Dragonflies series! I hope you find these posts interesting in some small way, even though the dragonflies I talk about probably are not the same as what you see around your home. And yet, some dragonflies can actually be found all over this continent and sometimes beyond, over on other continents as well. They are amazing insects, very acrobatic and can be very friendly depending on the species. They can also be very colorful like this green darner in the pic below.
This is the female and oddly I only saw females last year. But hopefully I can see the males this year and get a pic of them. Their coloring is a bit different than the females. Green darners are one of the most common of our dragonflies. They are also one of the earliest to be seen in spring, and are around from May to October. Larvae grow over the summer, emerging as adults in fall and then migrate to the southern part of the US, Mexico and into the Caribbean. They are also large, up to 4 inches long and I think the wingspan must be about the same.
Then we also have the fawn darner shown above. These are a bit smaller, up to 3 inches long, both sexes are very similar looking. They are usually around from June to September and like shady areas around streams and rivers, but can also be found around ponds and lakes. This species likes to land on people also. We are on the farthest west of it’s range and goes throughout southeastern Canada and eastern US, particularly the northeastern areas.
Well, that is all for this time, thank you so much for joining me again this week for our look at these fascinating insects. Perhaps I should do a post on the spiders around here, like the one that just walked past my laptop. It’s one of the smaller types. Identifying all these spiders, however, is not a fun task for someone like me, looking at page after page of these….spiders. Sigh.
I hope you all have a wonderful day, please stay safe and God bless!
Steve and Muffin.
