For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hello everyone and welcome back to Darting Dragonflies! I wish I knew the names of more of these fascinating insects, but unfortunately it’s hard to find a book that covers dragonflies in this area. It’s harder than finding a mushroom book. Oh well, for now we can enjoy some pics of these acrobatic flyers anyway. Hopefully by next week I can put names to the dragonflies in the pics. Maybe. I will try anyway.
So, here we go with today’s look at dragonflies…
Dragonflies are amazing insects that can fly forward, backward, straight up or down, hover and even fly upside down. Depending on the species they can fly up to 30 mph (50kph).
There are 5,000 species of dragonflies around the world. We have 130 here in Ontario. I will share more facts about these amazing creatures in the next post which will be one week from today. A lot of people don’t like dragonflies, due to the fact they can be a bit scary looking. But really, they are quite beautiful and very beneficial. I hope you are enjoying this new little series. I hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday and God bless!
Steve and Muffin.

I like dragonflies. I have posted an embellished photo of one above my poem, “On Gossamer Wings.” I also have a haiku by the same name. Their wings are so fragile looking, but they are actually quite strong. When the light hits them just so, they seem to glisten. Thank You for sharing!

Hi Steve – I see you are in Ontario. We moved from Muskoka, On., to rural NL. Nice post. 😄

Thanks so much Sally. Yes, I am way up in the northwestern part of Ontario, Kenora on the north shore of Lake of the Woods. Have a nice evening!😃😺🐉✈since there is no dragonfly emoji, there is a homemade version.😂

That is beautiful there – God’s country. I have visited Kenora. You are blessed. 🤗

Yes, God’s country is right. Personally I think it’s the most beautiful place in western Canada to live. I have never been east, so I can’t compare that direction.😃😺🌲🌳🏕

Steve, it is beautiful here too, but being so close to salt water, and with an absence of trees, we lack colourful birds, and so the photos you post are very lovely to see. 🤗

Glad you like the photos! I don’t know if I could live somewhere without trees, even though I am originally from Manitoba. Thanks so much!

We are considering a return move to Muskoka. We miss the trees too, and the beautiful colourful birds. 🤗

Yes, it does seem to be. No better place than Ontario. Not including the further south area.😂😹

Your pics are “right on”, …so pretty and detailed in appearance ! It is snowing here and windy…take care when you have to go outside…tell Muffin to warm your feet and not to bite/scratch them ! But then Muffin wouldn’t have any fun…😂😻🦋❄️🌹

Thank so much Simon!😀 Well, the forecast was for 10cm of snow, but HA, we only got 8cm! So now I have to wait for the man to come and shovel my place, might not happen today, but that’s okay, I don’t need to go anywhere today. Strong north wind blowing but it’s not cold out there.🙃🌴 It’s -6 right now, a nice morning!😁🌨☃ I hope you are having a good evening Simon!😃😺🌙🐉✈Notice my “dragon” “fly” emoji?

Hi Steve, I do notice the dragon fly emoji 😸🐉 I found it too 🤸 No man to shovel 🤔 it won’t melt by itself 🙄🤔 why it won’t melt by itself 😸😸 So strange 😳 -6 😣 I’ll freeze for sure, I’m sure you will be warm for that temperature 😉 🐉This dragon flies, make sense 🤔 Yes it is😉☺️

Lots of people walk around in T-shirts at this temp.😬😲 Not me though, I still wear a jacket,🤔😂 but not my winter jacket. The snow will melt a bit on Saturday when the temp is supposed to be 5!🌞😎 Wow, spring for a day! Then it gets cold Sunday with more snow, down to -19 again.🥶🙀 Sigh. Back to winter. But this is the way March works around here.😳😲🙄

Thank you so much Renee! It’s not easy getting close to some of these dragonflies. Some varieties are easier, others are very difficult. But it’s fun!😃😺📷🐉✈

I guess I didn’t see them on your blog Alessia. I admit I haven’t been reading any blogs much this winter but I am now trying to get back at it again.

Quiet Steve, I also can’t read you very often, I have a lot of time away from home for office work, then the house to look after, the garden and my family! So we’ll both recover! I’m happy if you look at the photos of the blue dragonflies! Thank you!
