Solitude On My Deck. #5

Good morning to each of you on this wet Saturday! Anyone ready for a nice hot cup of coffee? I thought perhaps we would go back a bit and enjoy some time by a nice little lake not too far from here. There are some nice picnic tables, some in the sun and some that are nicely shaded under birch and jack pine trees.

There are some nice picnic tables here.

The lake has beautifully clear water and always a resident pair of loons. It is a very popular location for travelers to stop for lunch and have an enjoyable picnic. There are usually lots of blueberries here in the summer as well and it is a great spot to find many different wildflowers and birds.

It is a beautiful clear water lake.

One of my favorites, the chestnut-sided warbler is singing constantly today. There is also a yellow-rumped warbler singing in one of the jack pines. And the beautiful summer song of a song sparrow singing from one of the bushes beside the lake.

Looking across the lake.

They like being along water, whether it is lakes or rivers. They can be found inland too, but it is not so common. It is a great place to come and spend a day, enjoy a picnic lunch and wander around to enjoy the scenery and take pictures of the birds and wildflowers.

Pincherry flowers and a flower fly.

Plus the many other things, like insects, especially dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies. The day we were here there was also dozens of flower flies, two different species that I located quickly. There may have been more but I was concentrating more of locating wildflowers that day.

Wood strawberry, our most common wild strawberry.

And there were a lot, pincherry, Saskatoon, lowbush and velvet-leaf blueberries, wood strawberry. Should be a good year for the fruiting bushes. Then there was also many pale corydalis, dandelion, toadflax, starflower and others too.

Toadflax, a very small easy to miss wildflower.

The lake is good for fishing as well, though this is one lake I have never tried out for fishing. Mostly it has rainbow trout, the lake was stocked with them back in the 1970s and they have done very well. The water is quite high this year, as it is in most lakes around here. Just a beautiful place to relax. This is wonderful solitude! Well, thank you so much for joining us today, I hope you have a wonderful day and God bless!

  1. You are a fantastic “portrait” and “up-close” photographer, but I really enjoy your longer shots as well! Nice composition of the picnic table and lake shots.
